The opening of Ahn'Quiraj, a truly impressive (and laggy) event - image source On the 'positive' side, the Nostalrius team is releasing their entire code and encrypted personal account data, so if someone ever decides to recreate Nostalrius under a different name, they have the option to do so, though the wisdom behind that is questionable as there is the constant threat of Blizzard's rightful lawsuits hanging overhead. But still, its a shame to see one of the rare few completely-free servers fade away, because even though I wasn't invested in it personally, I know exactly how many of the people there feel. Much like the Warhammer 40k Inquisition, its pointless to blame Blizzard on this issue as their lawyers are simply doing their jobs, and if they didn't it would set a nasty precedent that would hurt Blizzard, and their players. So it is with great sorrow that I'm here to tell you that Nostalrius Begins, the biggest and best private Vanilla WoW server, is being shut down on April 10 due to a cease & desist letter from Blizzard. However, those who do support this spend a lot of time playing WoW on Nostalrius and certainly this is a very emotional moment for the community and the team behind its creation.I was privileged to be a member of the generation that grew up with World of Warcraft, and despite the Vanilla/Burning Crusade days being long since over, they still hold a special place in my heart, as do all the people I've spent countless hours in 40-man Naxxramas with. The community overall is divided over the situation, many support this while other totally dismiss the existence of such servers. However, Nostalrius user base is half million strong which disagrees with Blizzard. This is not something Blizzard wants players to have, in fact, they believe players aren’t interested in such servers. That is if their hosting company manages to keep them up for that long.įor those who don’t know, Nostalrius is a “private server” which hosts games of Vanilla World of Warcraft. Nostalrius Begins PvP, Nostalrius Begins PvE & Nostalrius TBC will be shut down definitively from 10th of April 2016. They are going after OVH, the hosting company of WoW servers.
Nostalrius released a statement saying that it has received a letter from US and french lawyers, on behalf of Blizzard Entertainment. The company is ready to stand trial and has forced Nostalrius to shut down its services.
Blizzard is ready to sue Nostalrius in just a few days for running illegal World of Warcraft servers.
